Shells and Driftwood FAQs
Our products are responsibly sourced from trusted suppliers worldwide, with a focus on sustainability and ethical practices. For more details, please see our Responsible Sourcing page.
All items are natural materials. Each piece is unique in shape, size, and colour, reflecting the beauty of nature. Learn more about what to expect on our Natural Variation page.
We do our best to accommodate size preferences, but natural variation means exact specifications cannot always be guaranteed.
Because shells and driftwood are natural products, variations in colour, texture, and size are expected. This uniqueness is part of their charm. For more information, visit our Natural Variation page.
We partner only with suppliers who meet our strict standards for environmental responsibility and fair trade. Full details are available on our Responsible Sourcing page.
Shells go through a multi-step cleaning and preparation process to ensure they’re safe, export-ready, and suitable for use in home décor and accessories:
- Sorting & Washing: Shells are manually cleaned using water, soft brushes, and mild detergent to remove sand, mud, and organic debris.
- Boiling (if needed): Some batches are boiled to sanitise, remove odour, and eliminate remaining organic material.
- Sun-Drying: Natural heat helps sterilise the shells and prevents mould growth.
- Surface Cleaning: Shells are scrubbed or brushed to smooth the surface. Some may be lightly sanded or polished, and sharp edges are trimmed for safety.
- Finishing (when required): A mild hydrogen peroxide bath may be used to brighten shells. For items where natural patina is preferred, no whitening chemicals are applied.
- Final Drying & Inspection: Shells are fully dried to prevent moisture buildup during shipping. Each batch is checked for cleanliness, uniformity, defects, and correct species to meet international standards.
We use driftwood because it’s a sustainable, low-impact material. Instead of sourcing new timber, we repurpose wood that’s naturally washed ashore. This reduces deforestation, keeps beaches cleaner, and gives new use to materials that would otherwise go to waste. Driftwood is durable, unique.
Availability is seasonal and subject to natural supply. Certain species may also be restricted by collection or import bans. We comply fully with these regulations to support marine conservation and ensure long-term viability of supply.
Starfish are porous and can retain a natural marine scent even after processing. If needed, we recommend airing them out or misting lightly with a room spray before display or repackaging.
