Responsible Sourcing

Ethical sourcing is at the heart of our Drift & Shore Co. branded products. Our customers care deeply about where products come from, and we share that commitment by ensuring every shell we supply is responsibly collected, environmentally sustainable, and supportive of local communities.

Our Three Primary Sources

Supporting Local Communities

Ethical sourcing is not only about protecting ecosystems, it’s also about supporting people. In many regions, seaside residents gather discarded shells after seafood harvests. Rather than allowing these shells to go to waste, communities clean, sort, and sell them to shell markets. This creates valuable income opportunities while reducing waste.

In tourism destinations, certain shell species are naturally abundant and widely served as specialty dishes. The empty shells from restaurants and food stalls are collected and supplied to the shell industry. Local governments regulate these harvests and enforce seasonal collection periods to allow natural replenishment and maintain ecological balance.

Compliance & International Standards

We strictly adhere to international and local regulations to ensure responsible trade:

CITES Compliance: We follow the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which regulates certain shell species to protect biodiversity. All required permits and documentation are maintained to ensure shells are legally and ethically traded.

Collection Bans & Seasonal Restrictions: Local authorities enforce bans and seasonal limits to protect breeding grounds and allow natural replenishment. This means some species or sizes may be unavailable at times, reflecting our commitment to sustainability.

No Destructive Practices: We do not source shells from reefs, deep‑sea divers, or restricted areas. Our suppliers are prohibited from damaging beaches or coastal habitats to collect shells.

Our Commitment

Through regulated sourcing, adherence to CITES, and strong local partnerships, we ensure that every shell has a responsible story behind it. These practices not only safeguard marine biodiversity but also strengthen coastal economies and reduce waste.

Ethical sourcing means more than compliance, it means protecting nature, supporting communities, and ensuring that the beauty of shells can be enjoyed for generations to come.
